What agents are and how to manage them
The Agents page (sidebar → Agents) shows all custom MCP tools (Model Context Protocol tools) that extend the AI assistant's capabilities beyond answering questions from documents.
What an agent does
An agent is a named, callable tool that the AI can invoke during a conversation — for example, to look up live data, run a calculation, or call an external API. Each agent has:
- A name and description that the AI reads to decide when to use it.
- An optional response template that structures the output.
- An active/inactive toggle.
Stat cards
| Card | Meaning |
|---|---|
| Total agents | All configured agents |
| Active agents | Agents available to the AI right now |
| Inactive agents | Agents that are configured but turned off |
Viewing agents
All users can see the agent cards. Inactive agents appear dimmed (50% opacity).
Creating or editing an agent (admins only)
- Click the + New Agent card (visible to admins only).
- A modal opens — fill in the name, description, response template, and toggle active status.
- Click Save.
To edit an existing agent, click its card. The same modal opens pre-filled.
Non-admins see the cards but cannot edit them. A note at the bottom of the page confirms this.
